Why it’s important for couples to talk about money
According to census data, 50 percent of people entering first marriages get divorced. Fifty-seven percent of divorced couples in the United States cited financial problems as the primary reason for the demise of their marriage according to a survey conducted by Citibank.
If you’re in a serious relationship, it’s absolutely critical to communicate. If you don’t, it’ll cause a stress fracture that widens to a gap, then widens further to an irreconcilable abyss.
To move forward positively, you must first recognize that money invokes certain behaviors in you, and maybe in your partner, based on your family history and personal experiences. You may not have spent much time thinking about how much your childhood and/or certain family members influenced your habits. You may not have had the right opportunity to share your fears or concerns or challenges. Regarding money, you may not know the context or details of your partner’s emotions and experiences.
